Open Art - Creative Numeracy

We are delighted to expand our Open Art offering as part of the Multiply adult numeracy programme, supported by Ards and North Down Borough Council.

These sessions are for anyone aged 19 or over, who does not have English as their first language, and do not hold any formal maths qualifications. The activity is free of charge, however booking is required (link below).

Participants will be introduced to mathematical concepts via creative exercises and day-to-day applications, including shape, pattern, fractions, time and more. See the full programme below.

Programme 1 - at BOOM STUDIOS, bangor - Focus on art for well-being with everyday numeracy (Oonagh Linden)

  1. Thursday 6th Feb | 10:30 - 12:30 | Happiness Pies

    Group project  -  Mixed media  - incorporating messages of encouragement  as ingredients  and understanding basic fractions. 

  2. Thursday 13th Feb | 10:30 - 12:30 | Symbolic numbers and shapes

    Painting/creating mandalas using  simple counting. Focusing on an important number to create a large mixed media piece. 

  3. Thursday 20th Feb | 10:30 - 12:30 | Travelling

    Reading TimeTables and Bus Tickets  - make your own bus tickets.

  4. Thursday 27th Feb | 10:30 - 12:30 | Food & Recipe

    Painting with textures  and creating recipes for the artwork. 

Programme 2  - at boom studios, bangor - focus on maths with art (Heather Cassidy)

  1. Wednesday 5th March | 10:30 - 12:30 | Circle Angles & Measurements

    Explore mandala art using mathematical instruments such as compasses, rulers, and protractors to measure angles and parts of a circle (radius, circumference). Participants will create mandala designs using gouache paints and acrylic pens.

  2. Wednesday 12th March | 10:30 - 12:30 |2D Shapes & Fractions

    Inspired by Paul Klee's "Castle and Sun," participants will identify 2D shapes and fractions, creating stencils to assemble art pieces using varied materials like fabric, paper, and magazine clippings.

  3. Wednesday 19th March | EVENING CLASS 18:30-20:30 |Tessellation

    Study M.C. Escher’s tessellations and experiment with shapes like hexagons and pentagons to create fabric and paper patchwork designs.

  4. Wednesday 26th March | 10:30 - 12:30 |3D Shapes & Nets

    Analyze sculptures by Bathsheba Grossman to understand 3D shapes and their properties. Participants will use nets to create 3D structures and experiment with transforming 2D designs into 3D artworks.
