The 4 day week..
We have the first 4 day week under our belts..
The 4 Day Week Global is led by entrepreneur and philanthropist Charlotte Lockhart, CEO Joe O’Connor and architect of the movement Andrew Barnes, author of The 4 Day Week: How the Flexible Work Revolution Can Increase Productivity, Profitability and Wellbeing, and Create a Sustainable Future.
Boom Studios is joining 70 UK companies and over 3300 workers for a a 6 month pilot running in the UK from June to November.
We are joining enterprises of all shapes and sizes in the UK trial and a diverse range of sectors embraced the productivity-focused, reduced-hour model of work with the support of 4 Day Week Global, as pilot programmes roll out in the UK, North America, Ireland and Australasia in 2022.
9 years ago “before Boom” actually started.. my work was irrational to say the least.
Snatched chunks of time around a young family, working in Snakes & Ladders (the local play place), surrounded by people and a lot of noise and the income reflected this.. it was irratic. A good pay check was rare and the gigs infrequent.
Taking control of that and understanding that my work could be on my terms, took time, patience and investment and commitment.
Patience in myself and patience of those around me that support what .
The investment was fluid, sometimes it meant re-investing the pay check back into my work, contributing to a regular bill.. childcare was the major one, other times it was time … doing a training course to develop an area that I was weak in.
That blend proved beneficial .. and nearly 8 years, some of those challenges have faded or become less.
Participation In th he four day week pilot is an opportunity to look at some of those organically developed habits and try another way.
The 4 day week has been in the organisation for financial reasons for 2 years, but we have never thought that it could be the norm.
As we are a developing organisation.. this could be a benchmark.
Can we achieve all we intend within a more restricted timeframe?
A 2014 national Gallup poll put the average number at 47 hours per week, or 9.4 hours per day, with many saying they work 50 hours per week.
The 2020/21 lockdowns have slowed my pace. I refuse to continue to juggle the 6 balls of work, family, my health, my ambitions, eating & sleeping.
I’m 1 ball only now!! And there is alot less dropping!
Studies show that over the course of an 8-hour workday, the average employee works just 2 hours and 53 minutes.
The 2016 survey of 2000 business offices revealed the rest of the time, people spend it on a combination of:
Reading the news.
Browsing social media.
Eating food.
Socialising about non-work topics.
Taking smoking breaks.
Searching for new jobs.
Of those 3 hours of ‘productive time,’ a lot of this time is spent in meetings.
While we have a small staff team at Boom we have a larger community of artists designers and makers that we support and influence hopefully improving their overall well-being .
