Wells Art Contemporary 2024: Installation show
There are two parts to WAC 24: the Gallery show and the Installation show.
The Gallery show takes place within the Cathedral cloisters, a white walled space alongside the main body of the Cathedral. More details and how to enter the WAC24 Gallery Show will be available from 24 January 2024.
The Installation Show runs concurrently with the Gallery Show and offers a unique opportunity for twenty artists to create site-specific artworks for the main body of the Cathedral. WAC are delighted to announce that for 2024 the twenty selected installation artists will each be awarded a £200 bursary. WAC welcomes work from artists of all faiths and of none. However, many of the most resonant pieces in recent years have acknowledged in one way or another the sacred spaces of the Cathedral, its soaring Gothic architecture and its epic public grandeur set against intimate places for quiet reflection. We are not asking for religious art; rather, ideas for artworks which convey a sense of spiritual intensity in response to this unique medieval building.
You can suggest a specific installation site anywhere within the Cathedral boundary, including the Chapter House, and its two wonderful outside spaces: the Camery Garden and the Palm Courtyard (surrounded by glassed in cloisters). Not all the spaces are grand, but they are all important. Some are vast and expansive; there are also quiet, almost secret, corners. Imaginative installations can make an enormous impact. You are encouraged to be bold and resourceful.
