Martin Williamson, Sculptor
Martin Williamson was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland. At an early age, Martin found art to be an activity within which he could escape from the realities of the outside world and be alone with his own thoughts.
Upon leaving school in the early 90’s Martin experienced a number of different jobs before settling into a career in home maintenance which has spanned the best part of two decades. Throughout this time, art was always something that Martin returned to but did not dedicate a significant amount of time to. As a result, Martin did not fully embrace his passion for art until a much later stage in his life, with his experience with sculpting only beginning in late 2018.
Martin draws influence for his art from the world around him, in particular nature and the emotions of individuals. Working out of small studio spaces, both at home and in Boom Studios Bangor, Martin is keen to provoke an emotional response and create conversation through his sculptures.
Through his work in home maintenance, Martin collects scrap materials which would normally go to waste (old copper pipes, glass units and waste timber for example) and repurposes them into elements of his artwork.
Some of the pieces found on his website began as solely a piece of scrap material which sparked an idea. Martin is keen on experimenting with new methods and applications for his art which has included producing a number of commission pieces, and spots exhibiting both in Northern Ireland and London.
