Jay McGilton | Anarchomedy | Past the Label
As a Studiomate…
Failed brain surgeon turned comedy writer, Jay specialises in the writing and production of comedy for television, radio and film putting his own work under the name ‘Past The Label’ in which he frequently collaborates with other writers and performers.
Jay recently completed production on ‘The Night Show’, a 30 minute comedy pilot/short that he wrote, co-starred and directed which was screened at the Strand Arts Centre Belfast and is currently out on the festival circuit.
He was a writer on the acclaimed BBC Radio Ulster sketch comedy series ‘Quick Comedy’ and wrote/produced/starred in the six-part audio sketch show ‘Sounds of Unfathomable Horror’ (available on Spotify), along with multiple ‘Short Cuts’ sketches online.
Alongside his personal endeavours, Jay has been working in the television industry since graduating from the University of the Arts London in 2016, and has worked on productions such as Panorama, Travel Man, The Blame Game, Doctors and The Paddy Raff Show amongst many others.
With big ideas for the future, he can be found in Studio 16 at Boom Studios penning his next project that you’ll relive again and again (in therapy…)
As a Workshop Facilitator…
Jay runs comedy/variety writing sessions, supporting performers to develop new material. This material gets a test run on the last Saturday of every month at Anarchomedy - a free live comedy variety night in the top floor workshop with stand ups, live music and comedy sketches.
“Pursuing comedy has always been in my DNA and over the years I've done this through making my own web-series, releasing an audio sketch show on Spotify, written sketches for BBC Radio Ulster and worked on multiple television projects, but nothing gives me more satisfaction than putting these showcases on. Myself and my sketch group Past The Label write and produce a brand new hour of live sketches each month. Despite the stress and last minute panic it brings along with it, I believe that's what makes us try and push ourselves to make each set better than the last - turns out deadlines are a good thing!”
